Reviews
The task of managing the immense amount of new medical information and the dissemination of that body of knowledge is formidable. Editor Broering, who wears several hats at Georgetown University's Medical Center Library, has collected here the experiences of professionals from large institutions active in resource education, communication, and other areas of library automation and systems development. The text offers case studies of various networking and systems projects used to increase information access in medical libraries. Through effective use of established methods of accessing medical data (i.e., MEDLINE), industrywide technologies (i.e., online catalogs and E-mail systems), and various National Library of Medicine (NLM) initiatives toward developing the virtual medical library (i.e., Integrated Academic Information Management System grants), the contributors give even small hospital libraries goals to aim for in using what they have to manage the ever-increasing flow of information. An invigorating professional read.
