A scarce and nicely-preserved piece by abolitionist William Hosmer (1810-1899) and dedicated to William Seward. E.M. Northrup may refer to Elizabeth Northrup, the daughter of Solomon Northrup (1808-?), an African American man kidnapped by slave catchers in the North until he won back his freedom in 1853.
