A rare record of the first ever Arab League Summit, hosted in Cairo during 13-16 January 1964. Original green illustrated wraps with UAR coat of arms to the back 14x20cm. Printed by Bahrain Press, Fayed Abdeen Neighbourhood. 109, (2)pp Arabic text, including b/w frontis portrait of Summit host President Nasser, and 3 full-page b/w maps. Wraps good only, foxed, with label to the spine. Interiors good or better, tanned, lightly creased with a couple of closed tears. The Summit was held at very short notice in response to Nasser's urgent appeal on 23 Dec 1963 for Arab Kings and Heads of State to set aside their differences and unite in response to Israel's intention to divert the waters of Lake Tiberias, and to address the Palestine issue. All member states attended, to consider how to thwart the Israeli water plan by non-military means, and initiate a new organisation to represent the Palestinians. Dated May 1964, this report was issued around the time the newly formed Palestinian National Council convened for the first time in East Jerusalem on 29 May, which culminated in the founding of the PLO on 2 June. The report contains chapters on Palestine, Israel and Zionism, the position of the Arab League and the UN, the diversion of the Jordan River and its consequences with maps showing the Johnston Plan initiated in 1955, the Israeli Plan, and the Arab League plan, and Summit proceedings. The second Summit followed shortly in Alexandria on 11 Sep 1964, to implement plans from Cairo including approval of the League's Headwater Diversion Plan, and establishment of the PLO.
