Item description from seller

A good copy of this Jorrocks novel with hand coloured illustrations. Hillingdon Hall or The Cockney Squire; A Tale of Country Life, by R. S. Surtees (not stated on title page), but listed as The author of "Handley Cross", "Jorrocks's Jaunts and Jollities," &c. With Twelve Illustrations by Wildrake, Heath, Jellicoe. Coloured by hand. Published by George Routledge and Sons, Limited, London and E.P Dutton & Co., New York. Printed by Ballantyne, Hanson & Co., Edinburgh. No stated printing date, but 1844 is stated in the Preface. Likely to be a printing from c. 1880-1890? A good hardback in original Publisher's red cloth binding with blind stamped front cover decoration and gilt to spine. Some bumping and wear and sun fading to spine and top area of cloth. Bumping to head and tail, and cloth frayed to a 1cm area at rear joint at head of spine. A little give in the spine. Endpapers with age spotting, and spotting to text block edges with a few small indents, and previous owner's signature to first free endpaper. Text and plates are bright and clean throughout and present attractively. Probably an unread copy as many pages are still uncut at top edge. Text in English. Prelims + 519pp + 12 hand coloured plates, including frontispiece, which are tissue guarded (with age toning to guards). Dimensions: approximately 228mm tall x 160mm wide x 45mm deep. Weight: approximately 1226g (unpacked weight).  More photos on request.
