27-річна Марта із покоління солом’яних сиріт — понуре дитинство у маленькому містечку, мама, яка покинула сім’ю заради заробітків в Італії. Але це лише стало поштовхом до того, щоб зробити успішну кар’єру ейчара в айті-галузі. Марта щиро насолоджується комфортом та добробутом, який створює для себе і для свого бойфренда Макса, і намагається триматися осторонь політичних новин. Аж ось в один момент її затишний світ перевертається догори ногами. Макс бере повістку в армію. Марта намагається відповідати суспільним очікуванням і прийняти такий крок, але внутрішній конфлікт і образа за те, що він не залишився з нею, не дають їй спокою. Їй здається, що це дуже хибний спосіб довести свою маскулінність, і це відчуття загострюється із наростанням сексуальної фрустрації. Гострий внутрішній конфлікт, який намагається подолати головна героїня, спровокований переоцінкою цінностей і тілесністю, яку не завжди вдається приборкати. Як вона долає депресію? Які рішення приймає? І головне: куди її приводить намагання втечі?
Роман зачіпає багато болючих тем, як то військовий і моральний обов’язок, стереотипи суспільства, відчуття безпеки в сучасному світі, патріотизм, націоналізм, ставлення до переселенців, двомовність, порівняння культур, роль жінки, її сексуальності та її прав і свобод.

When Marta’s boyfriend Max decides to enlist in the Ukrainian army to go and fight in the ongoing war in Eastern Ukraine, the young woman, 27, is torn. The fighting takes place far from the comfortable nest they have built themselves - some 1,500 kilometres away. Marta has made a success for herself working for the booming IT industry. Both she and Max lived a cosy life distant from politics and war. Until Max’s decision. With Max away, Marta tries hard to fit the model of a war hero’s girlfriend. Patriotism has become a new norm in Ukraine - one that can hardly be questioned. Yet the young woman feels an inner conflict between this social pressure and her rejection of Max’s departure. Sexual frustration does not help. Marta blames Max for enlisting on a false pretence. She feels her boyfriend may have been shadowed by the fact that she makes more money than him. Going to the war would be a way to prove his virility. Marta starts spending her time volunteering to help the Ukrainian army among one of the many organisations that popped up starting from 2014. She is sincere in her commitment. Yet it is a mere distraction that keep her from thinking too much. She befriends some of the female volunteers but her best friend is one of her work colleagues, Sofka. Easy-going and a crazy party devil, Sofka has a unique cynical sense of humour. She does her best to take Marta out. The young woman settles for a depressive routine with no perspectives of change going through regular mood swings from commitment to rejection. How is she going to go through it? Which decisions is she going to make? And where her attempts to escape are going to bring her? The novel tackles the issues of military and moral duty, search for the feeling of safety in the modern world, patriotism and nationalism, war-time conscription, female sexuality and bisexuality, sexual freedom and experiments, social pressure in a patriarchal society, discrepancies in salaries within a couple, post-Soviet generation of 1990’s, long-distance relationships, corruption, comparison of cultures and other important social issues.
