Hints on Wood-carving : Recreative Classes and Modelling for Beginners

Discover the celebrated instructional method of Eleanor Rowe (1849-1921) with Hints on Wood-Carving, a foundational guide that helped popularize the craft among women and amateur students in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Rowe, a renowned figure associated with the School of Art Wood-Carving at the Royal Albert Hall, wrote this book to share the practical curriculum developed in her popular "Recreative Classes."

First published in 1892, this book offers a less daunting, highly accessible approach to wood carving than many of the technical manuals of the time. It is particularly known for its emphasis on the close connection between modelling (clay work) and carving, using the former as a preliminary step to ensure perfect execution in wood.
