In the original French.A nineteenth-century edition of the picaresque masterpiece Gil Blas.With illustrations by Jean Gigoux.Gil Blas is considered to be the last masterpiece of the picaresque genre. Gil Blas is related to Lesage's play Turcaret. In both works, Lesage uses witty valets in the service of thieving masters, women of questionable morals, cuckolded yet happy husbands, gourmands, ridiculous poets, false savants, and dangerously ignorant doctors to make his point. Jean Gigoux,1806 - 1894 , was a French artist, draftsman, lithographer and illustrator. Shallcross Fitzherbert Jacson was the nephew of Samuel Edward Widdrington, 17871856, the writer on Spain. He inherited his estates and name.Bookplate of Joshua Sowerby to front paste down. In a half morocco binding with cloth to the boards. Externally, generally smart, with some rubbing and marks to the boards. Bookplate to the front paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with some spots. Good.
