A clean sound copy of the First and only edition, in original publishers cloth, recased with new endpapers.Illustrated throughout with engravings,lithographs (One in colour) and mounted Woodburytype photographs, folding pedigrees, geological tables and restored manuscript facsimiles,all [unusually] intact but showing signs of restoration. A contemporary review in the Antiquary states " The character of the work entitles it to a much wider circulation. Only 300 copies have been struck off, of which 50 are on large paper " and concludes. "As for the book itself it would not be fair to dismiss it from notice without adding that it is in every way a noble specimen of printing, and that the paper & binding correspond in excellence with the typography which we should imagine has never been equalled yet, and certainly never surpassed in any book printed far away from the metropolis. Loosely inserted are several interesting documents . An 1844 manuscript letter from Jasper Rodgers at Greaseborough to his uncle Joseph Rodgers at the Gas Office in Sheffield and a letter from Joseph Rodgers to his grandmother dated Feb 1834 both members of the family of printers & publishers which included the poet Paul Rodgers, friend & biographer of Ebenezer Elliot. A manuscript letter from Lady Fitzwilliam of Wentworth Woodhouse, together with a postcard of same from Hazeldene Rotherham. Further details and scans on request.
