An Historical Account of the Rise and Progress of the Colonies of South Carolina and Georgia: Volume 1

An Historical Account Of The Rise And Progress Of The Colonies Of South Carolina And Georgia by Alexander Hewatt. This two-volume history surveys the rise of English colonies in the southern Atlantic region, focusing on the founding and development of South Carolina and Georgia under the Lords Proprietors, the creation of early governance, and the interactions with Native peoples, pirates, and competing European powers. Hewatt compiles accounts drawn from original papers and manuscripts, including the Preface that explains his method, the difficulties of reconstructing early colonial life, and his intent to present a clear, useful chronicle even if imperfect. The work covers topics such as settlement at Charlestown, the Fundamental Constitutions (as proposed by Locke) and the politico-legal framework of the province, migration from England, France, and Ireland, religious differences and toleration, the slave trade and rice economy, Indian alliances and conflicts, piracy, and the Crown’s eventual assertion of authority over the colony. It offers a detailed, documentary panorama of colonial policy, economy, and society in the Carolinas and their neighbors in the colonial era.
