This historical discourse commemorates the two-hundredth anniversary of New Haven's founding, tracing the colony's origins to Puritan leaders such as Theophilus Eaton, John Davenport, and Edward Hopkins. It examines the early governance of New Haven, including the plantation covenant, the establishment of a church-centered democracy, land purchases from Indigenous peoples, and the precautions taken for defense in the wilderness. The narrative emphasizes education as a founding principle, detailing the development of public schools, a grammar school, and early efforts toward a college, underscoring the founders’ belief in knowledge as vital to civil liberty and religious polity.
