In the mid 1800s courageous men and women crossed the land from the Atlantic to the Pacific, passing through some of the most inhospitable terrain on the continent. Today only mute evidence marks their passage: deep ruts scoured in rock and soil, sullen unmarked graves. Occasional campsites along their trails are still littered with discards, and adobe ruins and rock formations mark spots where wayfarers found sanctuary.
