An Historical View of the Rise and Progress of Infidelity, With a Refutation of Its Principles and Reasonings: in a Series of Sermons Preached for the Lecture Founded by the Hon. Robert Boyle, in the Parish Church of St. Mary Le Bow, London, from the Year 1802 to 1805

William Van Mildert’s An Historical View Of The Rise And Progress Of Infidelity, With A Refutation Of Its Principles And Reasonings: In A Series Of Sermons Preached For The Lecture Founded By The Hon. Robert Boyle, In The Parish Church Of St. Mary Le Bow, London, From The Year 1803 To 1806, collects a Boyle Lecture-era program of sermons defending Revealed Religion against infidelity. The work surveys the rise and progress of infidelity from Biblical times through Judaism, Paganism, Mahometanism, and Popery, up to the Protestant Reformation and beyond, pairing historical narrative with argumentative exposition. Van Mildert argues that unbelief arises from a malevolent spiritual opposition and from human pride, while insisting that Christian revelation is supported by divine providence, miraculous signs, and prophetic fulfillment. The volume culminates with exhortations to sustain the Gospel in the face of anti-Christian currents, asserting that the Gospel’s ultimate triumph is assured and urging believers to stand firm in faith and in defence of Christian truth.
