The Historical Works: Now For The First Time Collected. With An Introduction, Containing Notices, Historical And Descriptive Of The Irish Colleges Of Louvain by Nicholas French presents a reprint of a mid-19th century Irish historical collection centered on The Unkind Deserter, a narrative about Ireland during the Cromwellian era and the Civil War that followed. This volume includes the editor’s Preface praising the value of contemporary sources for understanding history and compiles a detailed, polemical account of the Confederate Catholics, their leaders (such as Ormond, Glanmorgan, Orrery, and Clarendon), and the failures of peace efforts from the 1640s. It exposes the Confederate perspective on events, including the 1646 peace with Ormond, the Waterford assembly, and the political machinations surrounding the redistribution of lands and power. Blending biography, political history, and documentary material, this work offers a primary-source style window into Irish Catholic struggles, loyalty, and rhetoric of the era, serving as a scholarly and devotional contribution to Irish history and the study of factional politics in 17th-century Ireland.
