Illustrated with frontispiece, 7 plates, in-text vignettes, 1 folding plan. 204 pages + 4 blank pages. Bound in the original blind-stamped brown cloth boards, gilt lettering and decoration on spine. Both the first and second editions are of great interest for the students of the Old Course at St. Andrews. History and explanation of the game, tournament results from the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, etc. The folding street plan in very good condition. Spine with loss at head and tail, split and reglued lower portion. Brown cloth faded. Original endpapers, owner name and 1850 on ffep. Slight foxing through the preface, offset toning to pages opposite illustrations, else clean. Early golf reference. Covers protected in mylar. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
