About this volume
For centuries, cataract surgery remained a rudimentary and often dangerous procedure, with ancient and medieval physicians employing methods such as "couching" to displace the opacified lens. But history holds fascinating secrets—evidence suggests that cataract extraction and even suction-based removal may have been attempted much earlier than previously thought.

This meticulously researched book traces the history of cataract surgery, from ancient Greco-Roman techniques to groundbreaking innovations in the early modern period. It places special focus on Jacques Daviel, the 18th-century French surgeon whose pioneering cataract extraction method changed the course of ophthalmic surgery. Through in-depth analysis of historical texts, surgical techniques, and medical advancements, this book uncovers forgotten practices and challenges conventional narratives.

Ideal for medical historians, ophthalmologists, and anyone interested in the evolution of surgical techniques, this book provides a captivating journey through the history of one of the most transformative medical procedures.
