The original work was edited, with marginal notes, introduction and appendices by classical historian and scholar J. B. Bury. Includes various color maps of some aspect or other of the Roman Empire to endpapers and black & white photos scattered through the text. --- In reddish cloth backed in reddish-brown bonded leather, with gilt-stamped titling on black cover & spine blocks, with spine titling & decorations in gilt and pale yellow topstain to each volume. Each volume about 500 to 600 pages. --- An excellent set: clean, tightly-bound and sound though with some scuffing to cover extremities.
