The History Of England,: From The Earliest Period, To The Close Of The Year 1812 (Volume Ii)

Power, faith, ambition, and reform... The great currents of England's past sweep through these pages in a clear, continuous story up to the eve of modern Europe. The past feels startlingly near. A foundational English history book for serious and curious readers alike. In Volume II of John Bigland's monumental History of England, a classic British history volume first issued in the early nineteenth century, narrative history of England meets careful reflection on cause and consequence. Drawing on earlier historians and documentary records, Bigland traces the interplay of crown, parliament, and people, showing how monarchy and parliament in England evolved through rivalry, negotiation, and occasional crisis. Wars abroad and British wars and politics at home are set alongside law, commerce, religion, and everyday manners, so that the evolution of English society appears as more than dates and battles, a living national character in motion. First published close to the period it describes, this John Bigland England history offers a valuable counterpart for David Hume history readers, extending the story of England history to 1812 from a later vantage point. It serves both as a lucid history students reference and as a rich spine for a homeschool British history curriculum or early modern Britain history survey. Out of print for decades and now republished by Alpha Editions. Restored for today's and future generations. More than a reprint - a collector's item and a cultural treasure.
