About this title

Synopsis

""A History of Gavelkind: And Other Remarkable Customs in the County of Kent"" is a book written by Charles Sandys in 1851. The book explores the unique legal system of gavelkind, which was practiced in Kent, England during the medieval period. Gavelkind was a system of land tenure that allowed for the equal distribution of property among all male heirs, rather than the traditional primogeniture system. Sandys provides a comprehensive history of gavelkind, tracing its origins back to the Anglo-Saxon period and its evolution over time. He also discusses other customs and traditions unique to Kent, such as the Kentish Hock Tuesday and the Biddenden Maids Charity. The book is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the legal and cultural history of Kent and provides insight into the ways in which local customs and traditions shaped the region's identity. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
