About this title

Synopsis

History written close to the smoke of battle. Nothing was settled in 1861. In Volume II of Thomas P. Kettell's History Of The Great Rebellion, the American crisis becomes a fully fledged war, as the United States 1861-1865 strains every nerve to hold together. Kettell follows the secession of southern states through the hard work of confederate government formation, and sets these decisions against the Federal response: mobilisation, policy, and the relentless pressure of federal government finances. Part classic war chronicle, part 19th century political history, this is a clear-eyed civil war reference book for readers who want more than battlefield headlines. It keeps the reader close to decisions, documents, and consequences daily. It attends to the machinery of conflict: the Lincoln administration history behind public declarations, the flow of money and materiel, and the practical challenge of union army logistics. Reading Kettell today is also to encounter how contemporaries understood the Confederates and the Confederate States of America while events were still unfolding, giving the narrative an urgency later syntheses can lack. For casual readers, it offers a gripping, structured account; for collectors, a landmark voice in american civil war history. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume ii reprint preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike. More than a handsome addition to a shelf, it is a reliable companion for anyone tracing the forces that reshaped a nation.
