Two uniformly bound satirical novels by the Victorian author William Makepeace Thackeray, including his best known 'Vanity Fair'. Two popular Thackeray novels, uniformly bound in half calf.'The History of Henry Esmond', published in 1858, tells the story of the eponymous character, who was a colonel for Queen Anne, during the time of the English Restoration. There was a sequel published in 1859 called 'The Virginians'.'Vanity Fair', published in 1859, is a satirical novel that pokes fun of the customs of the upper middle class in the nineteenth century. The novel follows Becky Sharpe and Emmy Sedley, two friends with vastly opposing personalities. The reader follows them through their trials and tribulations, looking at the strict social conventions of the era.William Thackeray is best know for his satirical works looking at English society, most especially for 'Vanity Fair'. He tended to be quite savage in his attacks on society, publishing under various pseudonyms in his youth to avoid personal criticism.Bookplate of David MacKenzie to the verso to the front endpaper of 'Henry Esmond'. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto to the front free endpapers. In a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, generally smart. Spines and joints are a little faded. Light marks to the boards and spines. A little rubbing to the leather. Bookplate of David MacKenzie to the verso to the front endpaper of 'Henry Esmond'. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto to the front free endpapers. Internally, 'Henry Esmond' is firmly bound, 'Vanity Fair' is generally firmly bound, with some gatherings working loose. Pages are bright and generally clean with some odd spots. The occasional pencil annotation. Page 241 to 242 of 'Vanity Fair' is detached but present. Very Good. Seller Inventory # 763P25
