About this title

Synopsis

Before Kentucky was a state, it was a battleground of ambitions and ideas. The frontier was never abstract. In The History of Kentucky, statesman and historian Humphrey Marshall offers a vivid, first-generation account of the discovery, settlement and transformation of the Ohio River valley frontier from contested wilderness to organised commonwealth. Drawing on documents, public records and personal observation, this classic Kentucky history book follows the movement of peoples, the clash of empires and the forging of a distinctive backcountry society. Originally published in the early nineteenth century, this work combines narrative chronicle with early American history nonfiction. Marshall traces Kentucky settlement and pioneers, conflicts with Native nations, land claims, constitutional debates and the intertwined political and military history that framed the 18th century Kentucky frontier and the early statehood Kentucky era. Long valued as a Humphrey Marshall Kentucky history and an American frontier history reference, it remains indispensable for genealogy and local history research, and a rich primary source for any college Kentucky history course or reader curious about a frontier history classic written from within its own time. Out of print for decades and now republished by Alpha Editions. Restored for today's and future generations. More than a reprint - a collector's item and a cultural treasure for readers, researchers and collectors who value enduring accounts of the American frontier.
