Early days in Martin County, MN, are recalled in this colorful and informative 8.5 x 11" spiral bound booklet, reprinted from the rare 1897 book: History of Martin County, Minnesota Before 1880 by the William H. Budd. The 123-page booklet is printed on 60# paper with the print enlarged for easier reading. A vinyl sheet has been added to protect the 4-color front cover. Today the county includes the towns of Ceylon, Dunnell, Fairmont (county seat), Granada, Northrop, Ormsby, Sherburn, Trimont, Truman, and Welcome. However, some of these towns may not be mentioned in the booklet. Among the subject titles are: First Settler Arrives, Budd and Hall arrive, Severe Winter, Indian Massacre at Spirit Lake, Two Men Carried Message, Soldiers Camped at Cedar Lake, Indian Agent Flandrau Reports, Mrs. Thatcher's Death, Mrs. Marble Rescued, Elm Creek Area, Defense Force Including Sherman Batter, More Settlers, Fort Britt Pact, Claims Filed in Center Creek, First Wedding, County Organized and Townsite Sharks move in, Norwegians in Fox Lake, First Bridge from Tuttle Lumber, Election Districts; County Board Organizes, Fairmont's First, First Lawsuit; First Fourth of July Celebration, the Sioux Uprising and some of its causes; Frontier Army Life, (Civil) War Time Hardships on the Home Front, Lincoln Calls for Volunteers in 1864, Schools, Ministers, a Coroner's Inquest, Bloodhounds Boost Defense Against Indians, A Famous Trotting Race, First County Fair, First Political contest, Singing Schools and Blizzard Deaths, Prairie Hotel De Luxe, Three Sheriffs in 1866, and other items too numerous to mention. The book includes maps of each township with names of property owners in many cases. The booklet includes an 18-page section of pictures, plus a brief section from Minnesota, a State Guide, written by the Federal Writers' Project of the WPA in 1938. The guide excerpt includes a small map of the area.…
