"The History of Materialism and Criticism of Its Present Importance" is a monumental survey of philosophical thought, tracing the development of materialist ideas from the atomists of ancient Greece through the scientific revolutions of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Written by Frederick Albert Lange and translated by Ernest Chester Thomas, this work provides a comprehensive account of how materialist theories have shaped human understanding of the physical world and our place within it.

This edition features an insightful introduction by the renowned philosopher Bertrand Russell, adding significant depth to Lange's analysis. The text examines the core tenets of materialism, its relationship with empirical science, and its broader implications for ethics and religion. Lange offers a critical perspective, distinguishing between materialism as a fruitful scientific method and materialism as a finalized metaphysical system. By exploring the intellectual shifts of the modern era, the work addresses the philosophical challenges posed by the rise of natural sciences. Lange's masterpiece remains an essential resource for students and scholars of philosophy, offering a profound exploration of one of the most enduring intellectual movements in history. Its rigorous historical approach and philosophical depth continue to provide valuable insights into the dialogue between science and metaphysics.
