About this Item

Volume I only of the Second edition from 1782 when it was published as a two volume set. Contemporary full leather binding with five raised bands to the spine which has gilt decorations. This binding matches the binding on another from the same family collection which I also have for sale but as that is volume I of part II from the 1784 edition when a further two volumes were issued it seems pointless to try and group them together without the other two volumes even though they were probably originally bound as a four volume set. The title panel is present but the volume number panel has been lost. The volume number is stamped on the spine. The spines has chipping at the top and bottom. There is cracking to the edges and the front panel is partially detached - along about two-thirds of its length. The corners are bumped with some rubbing and fraying and there is some light surface wear to the front and rear panels. Previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown - Margaretta Phillipina Wale of Shelford near Cambridge - with the name of an earlier family member at the top of the title page. Browning around the edges of the endpapers. Quite heavy creasing to the page following the front free endpaper. Small creases to the corners of three other pages. There is light browning to the pages with some spots and marks in a few places but the pages are otherwise generally unmarked.
