This substantial volume, first published in 1851 and now reprinted, traces the history of ship-building from classical times to the beginning of steam navigation in the Royal Navy. The author describes the progress of many sea battles and explains their outcome in relation to the construction and economics of the ships involved. The well-illustrated text also covers the material and building of ships, their lines and sailing qualities; valuable appendices record the vessels of the English and French navies. Bruzelius: 58 finely engraved plates from the era of galleys, hull plans, ships of the line in the reigns of Elizabeth to George IV, sterns, timbers and up to sections of steam auxiliaries built in 1849. Witt Collection: Born in 1785. He was master Ship Shipwright of H.M. Dockyard, Portsmouth and lectured at the Central School of Mathematics and Naval Construction. He died in 1859.
