About this Item
Early days in New Castle County, Delaware, are recalled in this new 202-page excerpt reprinted from J. Thomas Scharf's History of Delaware 1609 - 1888. The book, originally published in 1888 by L.J. Richards & Co., Philadelphia, PA, is printed on 8 1/2" x 11" paper. The front cover is an 80# card stock, protected with a vinyl sheet. A book focusing on the history of Wilmington, Delaware, is available separately, as are books on Sussex and Kent counties. While Scharf's book does not have a biography section, it does contain hundreds of names of early residents, including early lists of tax payers, public officials, etc., with details on some of the prominent persons and earliest settlers. Following a general history of the county, this book covers geographic divisions within New Castle County called "hundreds." These include: New Castle (including the city of New Castle), Christiana, Brandywine, Mill Creek, White Clay Creek, Pencader, Red Lion (including Delaware City), St. George's (including Middletown), Appoquinimink. Each of these has details on churches, businesses, schools, etc. Illustrations include Old New Castle County Courthouse, the new courthouse at Wilmington, the old Richardson house, Captain Thomas Bebb, Mr. Vernon Place (residence of J.B. Cazier) and 24 individual pictures of residents of the county.
