8vo, 22cm, first edition, 288p., black cloth, gilt spine titles, text is toned as usual, produced on fragile paper, lacking front free fly, Gourlay, a clergyman, was born in Tryone in Ireland, 1821-1904. He came to Canada in 1834 and was educated at Knox College, Toronto and at Princeton University. He was ordained as a Presbyterian minister in 1851. After several posts in the United States he spent his later years at Aylmer, Quebec. Example from p82-3. ". Not far from Wilson's, some of whose descendants we have met on the Gatineau. dwelt the Cathcart family, distantly allied to the heroic general who had both limbs off in the great battle in the Crimea, and by hos own request was lifted from his horse, and set on a piece of disabled cannon, that he might give commands while he lived.
