About this Item

12mo, contemporary tree-calf, red morocco spine label, blind rules, gilt decorations and lettering. An obscure edition of Johnson's novella. The slipcase states on the spine that this was "Margaret Rhodes' Copy." Rhodes (1925-2016) was a first cousin of Queen Elizabeth II. On the title-page is a small cypher-like ownership stamp in the form of a key. On the front free endpaper is a signature in pencil with the notation of "Campo de Fiori: Nov: 1885:" Some foxing, but a fine, handsome copy, enclosed in a chemise and quarter calf slipcase. Not found in Fleeman; OCLC records three copies (Yale, St. Andrews, and Bibliotheque Nationale de France) A French edition, printed in a small pocket format.
