Robertson's bookbinder's ink stamp on the front free-endpaper. With a prize nameplate from Geelong Ladies College. William Robertson, 1721 1793, was a Scottish historian and Principal of the University of Edinburgh. He was educated in Dalkeith and at the University of Edinburgh, where he studied divinity. He became minister at Gladsmuir in 1743 and later at Lady Yester's Kirk and Greyfriars Kirk in Edinburgh. A staunch Presbyterian and Whig, he volunteered to defend the city against the Jacobites led by Prince Charles Edward Stuart in 1745. During his lifetime, Robertson became Royal Chaplain to George III , Principal of the University of Edinburgh, Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, and Royal Historiographer. He was also a member of the Poker Club. Robertson was a significant figure in the Scottish Enlightenment and also of the moderates in the Church of Scotland. William Hickling Prescott, 1796 1859, was an American historian, known for his books The History of the Reign of Ferdinand and Isabella the Catholic and The History of the Conquest of Mexico. Prescott graduated from Harvard in 1814. He made an extended tour in Europe, and on his return to America he married, and abandoning the idea of a legal career, resolved to devote himself to literature. In all his works Prescott displayed great research, impartiality, and an admirable narrative power. He was a man of amiable and benevolent character, and enjoyed the friendship of many of the most distinguished men in Europe as well as in America. Bound in half leather and marbled paper-covered boards, with gilt lettering. The front inner hinge is strained and pages iii-vi are starting to come away, but still firmly attached. There is mild wear to the extremities, including mild bumping and rubbing. The binding is tight and firm. Internally the pages are bright and clean, with some scattered spotting to the first and last few pages. Very Good.…
