Early days in Rockingham County, North Carolina, are recalled in this new 36-page spiral-bound booklet, comprised of excerpts from several vintage books, the oldest dating from 1851. These source materials include John Hill Wheeler's Historical Sketches of North Carolina; North Carolina, A Guide to the Old North State, a product of the WPA; and A New Geography of North Carolina. The tri-color front cover is printed on 80# card stock and has been protected with a vinyl sheet. The text is printed single-sided, with the print enlarged to fit the 8.5" x 11" paper and improve readability. Some of the places mentioned in the booklet include: Wentworth (the county seat), Reidsville, Madison, Mayodan, Stoneville, Ruffin, Stacey, Thompsonville, Price, Draper, Leaksville and Spray. Among the many subjects included are: Physical features, such as Matrimony Creek and the Dan River; Members of the General Assembly from Rockingham County before 1851; Judge Thomas Settle; William Byrd; Judge Thomas Ruffin; Industry (Union Carbide, Marshall Field, American Tobacco Co., etc.); Agriculture; Religion and Education; Indians and artifacts; Five governors -- Alexander Martin, John Morehead, David Settle Reid, Alfred Scales and Robert Glenn; the Polly Scott Inn; the "bateaux" boats; Stories about place names; "Jackson" -- the biggest swindle in the county, the town that moved, a muddy horse race, and numerous other interesting bits of history and trivia.
