Review
"An editor does not come across such talent more than five or six times in his life...I really do not believe I ever saw a war piece that excelled it, not forgetting Tolstoi."--Maxwell Perkins
"Such a picture of the Civil War has not heretofore been painted. A fantastic and utterly original book." --Philadelphia Inquirer
"A view of the Civil War worth putting beside Brady's photographs, Grant's memoirs, and The Red Badge of Courage."--The New Republic
"One of the richest and most pungent novels of the decade." --Sinclair Lewis
"It has been some time since we have had an American novelist gifted with such power and imagination. Pennell's work will be a permanent acquisition to world literature, a product as distinctly American and as apart from the literary language of other nations as America itself is from the European scene." --Saturday Review of Literature
