This is an antique copy of the "HISTORY OF ROME" by Oliver Goldsmith - "Pinnock's Improved Edition." 1853; Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co.; Philadelphia. The book features "numerous engravings" by William C. Taylor. "To Which is Prefixed an Introduction to the Study of Roman History, and a Great Variety of Valuable Information Added Throughout the Work, on the Manners, Institutions, and Antiquities of the Romans; with Numerous Biographical and Historical Notes and Questions for Examination at the End of Each Section." Leather spine with gilt lettering. The book is a historical narrative tracing Rome from its legendary founding in 753 BC to the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476 AD. It explores the political, military, and societal events that transformed a small city-state into a vast global power. This edition was written as a shorter version of Goldsmith's work made easier for students by schoolbook publisher William Pinnock. Condition: There are a few small, light stains on the covers. Cloth tears at the cover corners. Rubbing to the leather along the left and right edges of the spine. 1" cloth tear at the top edge of the front cover; 1" cloth tear at the bottom edge of the back cover; cloth tear along the bottom half of the right edge of the front cover. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Both covers are firmly attached. The text pages have consistent mild foxing, though heavy foxing on the end papers and pastedowns. Name/address/date (1857) written in pencil on the front end paper. Overall the book is in Good- condition.…
