Volume one is the fourth edition, volume two is the third edition, and volume three is the second edition, all issued in 1845. A detailed historical study of Rome from its founding to the end of the Second Punic War, fought between Carthage and Rome, the two main powers of the western Mediterranean in the 3rd century BC. Considered one of Arnold's chief literary works, these volumes explore the political, social, and cultural aspects of Roman history, drawing on various important primary sources. The work is divided into three volumes, with volume I focusing on the early history to the burning of Rome by the Gauls, volume II on the Gaulish invasion to the end of the First Punic War, and volume III on the period from the end of the First to the end of the Second Punic War. Written by Thomas Arnold, an English educator and historian who was an early supporter of the Broad Church Anglican movement. In the original full cloth binding. Externally, sound with light rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Fading to the spines and the board edges with the odd small mark. A small split in the cloth to the centre of the spine of volume II with small splits to the head and tail of the spine. Hinges just starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot. Contemporary ink inscriptions to the front endpapers. Good.
