History of Russian Philosophy: The First Comprehensive and Complete Survey in English

First published in 1952, History of Russian Philosophy fills a significant gap in English-language scholarship, as no comprehensive and complete survey of the development of Russian philosophical thought had previously existed. We owe a great debt to N.O. Lossky for undertaking this monumental task. His primary aim is to demonstrate that, while Russian philosophy draws heavily from the shared intellectual heritage of Western civilization, it is uniquely shaped by the Russian character, which has left a distinctive imprint on universally valid concepts and ideas.

Russian philosophers, as Lossky highlights, have been deeply preoccupied with religious questions, and their contributions to religious thought are of particular interest. The book provides in-depth examinations of key figures such as M. Berdyaev and Vladimir Soloviev, whose works exemplify the spiritual and metaphysical concerns central to Russian philosophy. Additionally, Lossky offers a critical and insightful analysis of dialectical materialism, further enriching the reader's understanding of the philosophical landscape.

Written in a clear and accessible style, History of Russian Philosophy is not only a valuable resource for students and scholars of Russian thought but also a work of historical significance for anyone interested in the broader history of philosophy.
