Originally delivered as the Colver Lectures at Brown University and the Elihu Root Lecture at the Carnegie Institution of Washington, and first published in 1931 and 1937 under Harvard University Press, this Braziller edition includes a new preface by Sarton.
Sarton argues passionately for the centrality of science in the humanistic tradition ? that the history of science is not merely a chronicle of discoveries but an essential component of human civilization and cultural understanding. Drawing on his encyclopedic knowledge of Islamic, Greek, medieval, and Renaissance science, Sarton presents a vision of the history of science as the history of human progress itself.
