Cloth boards attractive and sound ? tan textured cloth with brown lettering to spine, binding tight and square with only light wear to spine ends and corners. Interior pages clean and generally bright throughout; light toning consistent with age. Penciled owner's notation ("HSRB / C") to front free endpaper, otherwise unmarked. Dust jacket present but heavily worn ? significant chipping, tearing, and loss at crown and spine ends, with creasing, rubbing, and old tape repair visible; jacket is fragile and offered for reference only. A solid reading and research copy with attractive boards.
Description:
1956 George Braziller edition of this foundational text by George Sarton, widely regarded as the founding figure of the history of science as an academic discipline. Originally delivered as the Colver Lectures at Brown University and the Elihu Root Lecture at the Carnegie Institution of Washington, and first published in 1931 and 1937 under Harvard University Press, this Braziller edition includes a new preface by Sarton.
Sarton argues passionately for the centrality of science in the humanistic tradition ? that the history of science is not merely a chronicle of discoveries but an essential component of human civilization and cultural understanding. Drawing on his encyclopedic knowledge of Islamic, Greek, medieval, and Renaissance science, Sarton presents a vision of the history of science as the history of human progress itself.
Sarton was the founder of the journal Isis and author of the monumental multi-volume Introduction to the History of Science. This slim but essential volume distills his philosophy of science and humanism for a general audience and remains a touchstone in the field.
