This volume examines the discoveries, theories, instruments, and intellectual movements that helped establish modern scientific thought, with discussion spanning astronomy, geography, physics, mechanics, natural history, medicine, philosophy, and technology. The work was originally published in 1935, with the revised second edition appearing in 1950. First Harper Torchbook edition, published in 1959 as part of the Science Library series, numbered TB 509. Attractive illustrated wrappers designed by Guy Fleming, with the original $1.95 price printed on the front cover. Volume II only; Volume I is not included. Condition: Good. Illustrated wrappers show moderate overall age and handling wear, including rubbing and small areas of surface loss along the spine and joints, edge and corner wear, light creasing, scattered spotting and soiling, and general toning. Spine ends are rubbed, with shallow chipping. Text-block edges are age-toned. Binding appears sound.
