William Robertson was a Doctor of Divinity from Edinburgh who became a Royal Chaplain to George III and a principle of the University of Edinburgh. This history of Scotland is one of his most notable works. A significant figure in Scotland s Enlightenment, his contributions to the history of Europe including both his work on Scotland and later work on Spain trace the changes in society from feudalism to the development of cities and the role of commerce in those developments. This particular set is the 16th edition, with the Author s last Emendations and Additions, to which is prefixed An Account of the Life and Writings of the Author, by Douglas Stewart, F.R.S., Edinburgh. 3 Volumes. Bookmarked pages left as is: there is a black string marker in volume II and a newspaper clipping marking the death of King Henry in volume III.
