About this Item
Canterbury: W. Bristow 1797-1801. Second Edition, Improved and Corrected. Twelve volumes with new spines (last 50 years) to the original tree calf boards, with the original red labels to the otherwise plain spines. The 12 volumes include the 32 (of 33 or 34) folding maps of the Hundreds of Kent it appears from the Directions to the Binder that many, if not all, of the maps were to be purchased after the printing process. There are many further small engravings and vignettes throughout. 34 plates called for in the Directions to the Binder (see details below). Two or three illustrations in the text to each volume. There seem to be varying numbers of quoted maps and plates, possibly as the plan of Canterbury is included as a map (?). In this set 1 map directed to be in Vol 8 is in Vol 9; 1 map seems to be called for in Vol 9 but appears as a single map, rather than 2; so, depending on perspective, 1, 2 or no maps are missing. Occasional light foxing throughout. Some wear and rubbing to boards. Overall a Good, Sound Set. Very Heavy Set (10 kg+) and will require extra charges for postage.
