First published in 1614, Raleigh wrote his"The History of the World" while imprisoned in the Tower of London, from1603 to 1616, after being convicted of conspiring against King James I. Anintended three-volume set, this was the only volume completed and comesdown to the second Roman war with Macedonia. This edition includes BenJohnson's sonnet "The Mind of the Front". Jonson claimed to have revisedthe "History" before it went to publication. A very popular book, the"History" went through numerous editions, the 1687 being the tenth edition.…
