The tangled web of conspiracies: Adolf Hitler rose to prominence on the shoulders of a conspiracy -- he espoused that the Germans lost World War I not because of any military deficiency but because of a conspired betrayal. He came to power aided by a conspiracy of Germany's conservative elite. And he stayed in power both because of his own conspiracies and in spite of conspiracies and resistance lodged against him. In The Hitler conspiracies David Welch explores all these conspiracies, as well as the cloud of confusion surrounding Germany at the end of the war. From the failed "Beer hall putsch" that put Hitler into prison (Where he wrote Mein Kampf), to the "night of the Long knives" where Hitler solidified his newfound power, to the postwar era of suspicion, welsh explores the conspiracies born of Hitler and his enemies and how they continue to fascinate us today. David welsh is a professor of modern history and director of the Center for the study of propaganda at the University of Kent at Canterbury. His published works include Germany: propaganda and total war, 1914 to 1918; modern European history: a documentary reader, 1871 to 2000; the third Reich: politics and propaganda; and Hitler: profile of a dictator. He lives in south of England (Not Hitler, but the professor lives in South England)
