USADO / GEBRAUCHT / USED. «PART I of the following pages is an attempt to put in a form useful to those who would learn Hittite what is at present known of the grammar and script of the Hittite (Kanish) language. There is little in this Part that is original; it is an adaptation of the material which the path-finders, Hrozny, Forrer, and Friedrich have brought to light. The author's experience in teaching Hittite convinced him of the necessity of such a compilation. The transliteration and translation in Part II and the compilation of the vocabulary are an independent piece of work, most of which was completed before the publication of Friedrich's German translation of the same work appeared. As the writer's studies have been in the Semitic field of philology rather than the Indo-European, he has contented himself with stating facts, leaving philological comparisons to others. Part II will afford students material for practice in reading the language. The text there published is a kind of Xenophon's Anabasis for Hittite.
