About the Author
Mao Lee left her homeland (Laos) at the age of 7 with her family. Her father and many in the Hmong community had been allied with the Americans in the Vietnam War and fought the communists. To avoid reprisals, many of the Hmong left Laos on a boat and crossed Mekong River to Thailand. From the refugee camp, her family settled in the USA when she was 9 years old. Mao s father was a teacher who could read and write before the war and brought one book in Hmong and he taught his children Hmong language using pictures. When her father passed away, Mao and her siblings found many clippings of pictures for teaching Hmong language.
Lee first experienced the need of the second and third generation Hmong growing up in America. Learning the heritage language bridges family relationships and communication among older and new generations.
Mao Lee lives in Wisconsin with two children and her husband. Her children have been using the Hmong Picture Dictionary to learn White Hmong language.
