Hoffa's The Rise and Fall of Jimmy Hoffa As Witnessed by His Strongest Arm, First Edition, First Printing Hardcover Book by Joseph Franco & Richard Hammer. Tells the inside story of the Teamsters Union, payoffs, power struggles, and Hoffa's disappearance.
Reviews:
A product of Detroit's Italian street gangs, by the age of nine Franco had already killed twice and was soon accepting contracts to mutilate or kill. Assisted by Hammer (The Vatican Connection, etc.), but in his own colorful, obscenity-laced prose, Franco tells the story of his 30 years with Hoffa as Teamsters organizer and regent of affiliated unions during the post-WW II rise of union militancy. Applying his boss's credo that "fear and money make power," Franco, through his close Italian Mafia contacts, helped extend Hoffa's empire nationwide, including Washington and Hollywood. The authors provide insights into the Teamsters' feud with Robert Kennedy, which landed both Hoffa and Franco in jail, and the union's inner power struggles that resulted in an anti-Hoffa faction selling out to Nixon and effectively removing Hoffa from the Teamsters presidency. The mystery of his disappearance in 1975 from a Detroit parking lot has never been solved. Photos not seen by PW. Major ad/promo. First serial to New York Times Special Features and Detroit News; author tour.

Hardback. Condition: Used. In the grand tradition of literary collaborations that may be best described as ?inexplicable,? we present to you "Hoffas Man," an adventurous romp through the shadowy underbelly of America?s most notorious Teamster. Authored by the enigmatic duo of Joseph Franco and Richard Hammer, this 1987 speculative masterpiece takes a rather audacious stab at exploring the life of Jimmy Hoffa?s confidant, blending fact with fiction in a way that will leave you pondering if it was penned during an extended lunch break or, perhaps, a prolonged existential crisis. It?s the kind of book that begs the question: is this a biography, a thriller, or an elaborate practical joke on the reader? Picture it: the late ?80s, a time when the world was just grasping the concept of a mullet but hadn?t quite figured out aerobic videos. What better backdrop for the gritty saga of union meetings, clandestine deals, and enough intrigue to make a soap opera look like a knitting circle? If you thought the pages of history were dry, think again?this book is drenched in the sweat of hard-living men who likely had a precarious relationship with the law, and maybe their mothers too. The authors, Franco and Hammer, pull you into a whirlwind of dramatic retellings, where every chapter feels like it was written on a napkin at some dimly lit diner while sipping the strongest cup of coffee this side of a brick wall. You can almost smell the tobacco and regret that wafts off the pages, a fragrant reminder of a time when loyalty was measured in both cash and the occasional back-alley handshake. As you flip through the pages, you will encounter a plethora of delightful characters, from mobsters who make your average villain look like a dilly-dallying schoolboy, to union leaders bursting at the seams with zeal and charisma?who may or may not have had an unhealthy fascination with power tools. The plot dances like a drunk uncle at a wedding, zigzagging through betrayals, alliances, and perhaps the occasional recipe for a truly questionable meatloaf. But let?s not forget the real stars of the show: the dialogues that read like they were lifted straight from a B-movie script filled with tired clichés and exaggerated bravado. You might find yourself questioning if the characters are written to be memorable or merely to provide comic relief as they navigate a world far less glamorous than the glossy covers of magazines would have you believe. Spoiler alert: it?s usually the latter. Condition: This book has had its fair share of adventures and has come out the other side slightly worse for wear. Expect the pages to be a little dog-eared, perhaps with a few errant coffee stains that add a certain je ne sais quoi to the experience. It may even carry the scent of a bygone era, reminiscent of old leather jackets and the distinct aroma of danger. Wear and tear is to be expected, but who wouldn?t want a book that looks like it?s lived a life of its own? It?s practically begging to be passed around at your next book club meeting, perhaps as a conversation starter about the whimsical world of obscure literature. If you?re in the market for a book that dances on the edge of absurdity and historical recounting, "Hoffas Man" is your ticket to the kind of literary entertainment that likely won?t win any awards but will certainly win your heart?or at least your bemusement. It?s the perfect addition to that shelf where you keep the quirky tomes that make guests raise an eyebrow and say, ?What on earth is this?? So, whether you?re a history buff, a fan of the absurd, or merely someone looking to invest in a literary curiosity that may or may not provide insight into the dark art of labor relations, this is the book for you. Grab your copy from Crappy Old Books before it vanishes as quickly as Hoffa himself. Happy reading, or whatever you choose to call it. THIS BOOK BEARS THE CRAPPY OLD BOOKS STAMP.
