Very slight foxing to blank front and rear endpapers. Otherwise, apart from very slight creasing to a couple of pages, a very good to near fine copy - clean, bright and unmarked - of thjis scarce 1955 Douai-Rheims Bible. Note that this is a heavy book, so additional postage will be required for international or priority orders. ~UU~ [2.5P] This is the traditional Bishop Richard Challoner revision of the Douay-Rheims Bible, which updated the 16th-century archaic English into a more readable style while maintaining the literal translation from the Latin Vulgate. Imprimatur of Francis Cardinal Spellman of New York. Includes the text of key papal encyclicals concerning the study of scripture: Providentissimus Deus (Leo XIII) and Divino Afflante Spiritu (Pius XII). This highlights its alignment with Catholic biblical scholarship directives of the era immediately preceding the Second Vatican Council. The translation's most unique aspect is its direct and rigorous translation from the Latin Vulgate, St. Jerome's fourth-century Latin version, rather than the original Hebrew and Greek texts used by most modern translations. The translation is noted for its consistency with traditional Catholic doctrine and retaining specific theological terms (e.g., 'grace,' 'charity,' 'justification,' 'sacrifice') that some Protestant translations altered or paraphrased. As a Catholic Bible, it includes all 73 books recognized by the Catholic Church, including the deuterocanonical books (e.g., Tobit, Judith, Wisdom) that are often absent or placed in an appendix in Protestant Bibles. Hardcover. Condition: Fair. C. Wildermann Co., Worn cloth hardcover edition of the Holy Bible: The OT, originally published by the English College at Douay in 1609; the NT at the English College at Rheims in 1582. The OT is 1060 pages, plus indices; the NT is 305 pages, plus indices. The publishing date of this volume is unclear to me. There is an Encyclical from Pope Leo XIII in the prefatory matter. He died in 1903. There are the Imprimaturs dated as late as 1912. Condition notes: The front board has separation in the fabric at the top and bottom at the hinge. There is an ownership inscription in ball point opposite the title page, and an older inscription in fountain pen on the preceding page. The original end papers are intact, but the rear has chipped corners. The "Family Record" page between the OT and NT has been filled in. The first page of the Introduction is slightly askew, due to a publishing flaw. Seller Inventory # ABE-1663696297766
