Holy or High?: Rethinking Substance Use in African Christianity

Holy or High? Rethinking Substance Use in African Christianity
By Ernest Musekiwa

Across Africa, the conversation around alcohol and drugs in the Church is often marked by extremes—strict prohibition, uncomfortable silence, or oversimplified spiritual explanations. Yet the reality on the ground is far more complex.

In Holy or High?, Ernest Musekiwa offers a bold, balanced, and deeply contextual exploration of substance use in African Christianity. Moving beyond legalism and permissiveness, this book presents a biblically grounded framework rooted in discernment, responsibility, and transformation.

Drawing on Scripture, African realities, and practical counseling insights, this work addresses:

• The cultural and social role of alcohol in Africa
• The difference between use, misuse, and addiction
• The failures of legalism, silence, and deliverance-only models
• A holistic approach to counseling and recovery
• Youth, identity, and peer pressure
• How churches can build sober, wise communities

This is not just a theological reflection—it is a practical guide for:

• Pastors and church leaders
• Christian counselors
• Youth workers
• Believers seeking clarity and freedom

If the African Church is to respond faithfully to the challenge of substance use, it must move beyond rules to wisdom, beyond silence to truth, and beyond condemnation to transformation.

This book is a call to that journey.
