The Holy Life And Death Of The Lady Letice, VI-Countess Falkland, With The Returnes Of Spiritual Comfort And Grief In A Devout Soul. Repr. Of Part Of The 1648 Ed by John Duncon. This work presents a mid-17th-century English devotional narrative in the form of letters and responses between a Devout Soul and her spiritual advisor, addressing the life, trials, and consolations of religious devotion. The centerpiece, The Returns of Spiritual Comfort and Grief in a Devout Soul, traces how a devout believer experiences alternating seasons of spiritual consolation and grave distress, and how these phenomena are interpreted and guided by the guidance in the Answer sections. The text debates the nature of spiritual versus sensible comforts, the roles of grace, faith, doubt, and scruple, and offers practical means—prayer, meditation, fasting, worship, humility—to cultivate steadfastness. Though anchored in the theological discourse of its era, the work remains a vivid portrait of intimate spiritual struggle, appealing to readers seeking guidance on perseverance in faith, the fluctuation of divine favor, and the quest for a lasting peace in devotion.
