Home Base

When you turn a bunker into a home, the hardest thing to defend is your future.

After wildfire skies, convoy nights, and only one sleeping bag, Lauren Blake and Caleb Rourke are finally back on the ridge. Ridge Haven is no longer a one-man bunker—it’s a fragile, growing home base: kids chasing each other between cabins, neighbors tending terraced gardens, radios crackling with check-ins instead of panic.

But the more people call this place home, the more there is to lose.

Circling preppers show up with compound dreams and power plays. Rumors about “the ridge crew” spread over HAM radio. Inside the gates, small fractures appear—missed watch shifts, hoarded propane, old fear habits that don’t fit the new community they’re trying to build.

In the middle of it all, Lauren stumbles across the notebook Caleb hoped she’d never see: meticulously plotted solo “last resort” escape routes, updated recently. Every plan ends the same way—him alone.

She came to the ridge for safety, not to watch the man she loves vanish into the woods someday and call it love.

As a monster storm bears down and they board up windows side by side, every unspoken fear finally hits the table: trust, kids, what happens if one of them doesn’t make it, and whether Ridge Haven is a fortress he can still run from…or a life they’re both fully choosing. Between hammer blows and rising wind, Caleb blurts the one plan that doesn’t leave him alone: “Marry me, then. Put your name on the deed.”
