Hardcover. 264 and 234 pages respectively. Original heavily blind-stamped brown cloth from the Putnam's Popular Library series, containing two volumes complete in one. Two separate title-pages, the first reading-"Library of Entertaining Miscellanies Vol. II [rule] Home Philosophy. Complete in one Volume. New York: G.P. Putnam and Company, 10 Park Place 1853. The second title reads-Home and Social Philosophy: or, Chapters on Every-Day Topics from "HouseHold Words", edited by Charles Dickens, [Putnam engraved vignette of globe] First and Second Series Complete in one Volume. New York: G.P. Putnam & Company, 10 Park Place, 1852. {264pgs.] [234pgs.] Each of these titles had been issued in wraps by Putnam in 1852 and are included in Podeschi under D14 and D15. This two volume compilation is not listed in the Gimbel Collection. Intricately gilt stamped spine sunned and lightened with age, with sunning also affecting 35mm of front board along outside joint. Gilt decoration and lettering still bright however, with title and author quite readable. Rear free end-paper creased and second of two rear blanks shows light damp-stain along lower edge. Interior clean and fresh with no soiling or foxing. Light wear to top of back-strip. An exceptionally clean copy of this very scarce early American printing of articles originally published in Dickens weekly periodical, including "Three 'Detective' Anecdotes." Near very good copy.
