The Homeopathic Practice of Surgery, Together With Operative Surgery: Volume 1

The Homeopathic Practice Of Surgery, Together With Operative Surgery by Benjamin L. Hill is a 19th-century homeopathic surgical manual assembled by Hill with James J. Hunt (Part I: Homeopathic Practice, 1855) drawing on American and European clinical material. It codifies homeopathic treatment of surgical diseases and accidents, balancing theoretical discussions of inflammation and healing with extensive practical guidance: step-by-step procedures, apparatus descriptions, and postoperative care, all framed by a philosophy of simple, inexpensive, repair-oriented methods over radical amputation. The work covers fractures and limb stabilization, amputations by region, joints and excisions, ocular and ENT operations, head and trunk procedures, and miscellaneous surgeries, interspersed with case anecdotes and references to noted practitioners. Emphasis rests on limb preservation, detailed splinting and bandaging patterns, and a broad apparatus repertoire (including Liston’s splint and other homemade devices). Designed for medical students and practitioners within the mid?19th?century American/European homeopathic milieu, it closes with notes on professional networks such as the Western Homeopathic College.
