Homework for the Heart: Devotions for Teachers

The duties and responsibilities of teaching demand much of the mind and heart. This book will encourage and energize hardworking teachers in their week-to-week service to children and youth. Created for both classroom and Sunday school teachers, these fifty-two uplifting devotions will help individuals to connect their Christian faith with their mission as teachers.

Drawing upon a creative lesson plan format, the devotions use familiar school objects as springboards to spiritual lessons. Each devotion features supporting scripture (including NRSV and NIV) and a personal challenge to the reader, which is given, a fitting title such as “Pop Quiz,” “Group Work,” “Show and Tell,” or “Extra Credit.” A short prayer, called “A Word With the Principal,” concludes each lesson. Helpful teaching tips are included in many of the devotions. The book’s small size makes it a companion easily slipped into a desk drawer or tote bag.

Barbara Younger is the author of Purple Mountain Majesties, a children's picture book, and the coauthor of six books, including Hooray for Children's Church and Creative Ways to Offer Praise. She lives in Hillsborough, North Carolina.

Lisa Flinn, a former high school teacher, currently is a freelance writer and the author or coauthor of several books, including A Moment with God for Teens, Creative Ways to Offer Praise, Hooray for Children's Church, and Making Scripture Stick. She lives in Hillsborough, North Carolina.
